The Breeding Ground of Terrorism – Stupid Suggestions that Won’t Work

It is becoming clear that, in regard to terrorism, many people in the public arena have no idea what they are talking about. They see an event, like the recent terrorist attack in London, and blurt out what they consider to be the cure for an ongoing problem. Most solutions focus upon things that cannot happen yet make the person forwarding them feel like they have dealt a blow for truth. The problem with many solutions is that they lack anyway of being implemented and are therefore, little more than hot air.

Top of the list of stupid ideas is the notion of an Islamic Reformation just like the Christian Reformation centuries ago. “Where is the Muslim Martin Luther?” some cry. Then we a given a whole list of feel good stories about how the world was a better place after the Reformation. This is a very narrow minded and inaccurate version of history that reads more like Elizabethan and Puritan Propaganda, than the truth. I do not begrudge Protestants thinking that the birth of their new religious movement was a grand event, but we must temper this view with what actually happen and the bloody oppressions that followed. Irish history is testament to how reformed England did not usher in an age of peace and enlightenment. In fact, Europe was divided and thrown into disarray as the schism played out. This schism was only possible because there was a single Christian religion to break away from rather than the multitude of Muslim religions that have existed for centuries.

A Muslim reformation cannot happen because it has already had its schisms, leaving it without any central authority, official interpretations, or singular morality to rebel against. Islam is as fractured as the multitude of Christian, Hindu or Buddhist religious movements, each one claiming to be the authentic word of ‘god’. Muslims have had a so called ‘reformation’ when the Shiites broke away from the Sunnis. And reformation fractures have continued ever since, leaving the entire Muslim world a mosaic of beliefs that range from every possible version; from ones that reject violence, to those that embrace it. Talk of a grand Reformation of Islam is impossible because there is no central authority to challenge and therefore, no metaphorical cathedral door to nail demands to.

The second impossible dream is the complete abolition or destruction of the Muslim religion. Good luck with taking on 1.5 billion followers of Islam. Even if the entire Middle East was melted into a sea of glass by nuclear weapons, there would still be stack Islamic nations left, including Indonesia. It is not going to happen.

The third stupid suggestion being floated about is that all religion is to blame and should therefore be abolished. How such ban would be enforced is never spelled in detail. Why is all ‘religion’ to blame is never made clear? This is also a copout for self-righteous secularists who do not want to be reminded about the Soviet Purges and mass executions of religious people. Despite the best effort of the entire murderous Communist rule, religion survived every single time. Why is that?

Finally we have the amazingly stupid accusation that “Toxic Masculinity” is to blame for what is going on. (Yes, I did see your stupid tweet Bette Midler.)

We do know that celebrities have no real answers for anything beyond getting attention. We know that meaningless platitudes are not stopping any attacks. We also know that making impossible demands will never solve a thing. Instead each of these failures just creates white noise and distractions from focusing on real solutions.

I am seeing many demands for action but very few actual suggestions that will not make things worse. Even if someone does come up with a realistic solution they often do not have the power to carry them out. This is the crux of the problem. No one seems to have been given the power to do anything. Our political leaders are not taking action because… Are they pandering to an aggressive activist media? Or are they pandering to ethnic constituents who they believe vote in packs? Perhaps it is just good old fashion cowardice.
